The blame rests with Lagercrantz and with the producers who clearly thought that we wouldn't notice that a script boasting cheap thrills can't help but result in an even cheaper-feeling film.

The Girl in the Spider's Web lacks heart and compassion, choosing action over development of the flawed characters fans have come to love.

There aren't any surprises here as far as the narrative is concerned, but Alvarez, aided by a solid performance by Foy, again elevates what could otherwise be flat genre material into something that keeps the audience glued to the screen.

Claire Foy puts in an admirable performance with a plot that feels like a superhero movie played awkwardly straight.

[Relies] on a labyrinthine structure when it should just let its bruised heart shine through. The Girl in the Spider's Web demonstrates how uncertainty is a detriment, just as it proves Alvarez will always be a stylist worth watching.

La chica en la telaraña tiene más de esa vertiginosidad tan propia de las películas de Jason Bourne que la frialdad y desolación del universo de persecuciones y traiciones que Larson había concebido en sus novelas.

This edgy tale of female empowerment may be just what we need right now in this age of the 'Me, Too' movement.

In its third generation, the saga has become noticeably threadbare, even trite.

The Girl in the Spider's Web it's a captivating and effective action thriller, altought pretty less subtle, and more empty and shallow that its predecessor. [Full review in Spanish]

One really shouldn't be able to make a premise that starts with 'Black Metal Ellen Page versus Ivanka as imagined by Frank Miller for The Button The Blows Up The World' [this] dull.

Foy fully inhabits the role of a kick-ass female antihero in a film that checks a lot of boxes but still feels lacking.

THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB is about as delicious as a bagel without any cream cheese. Sure, the goods are there, but there's a complete lack of flavor that needs to be at the forefront of a film with this much intrigue.

The Millennium series continues with what's undoubtedly its weakest entry...

It is odd how out of date Lisbeth Salander already feels. THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER's WEB seems so much older and stodgier than Fincher's 2011 effort or the Swedish adaptation of the entire original trilogy.

A fat, big-budget dud with a pulse that even a versatile Foy can't keep from flatlining.

It's a shame to think that this might mark the end of Lisbeth Salander's cinematic adventures, but if this is indicative of what we're going to get, maybe it's for the best.

A fine, if serviceable, film with Claire Foy making the most of her almost-Terminator like indestructibility. What brings the film down is the blunting of the edges. The series has such potential, in the end though it's a tame dragon this time around.

I think it suffers to some extent from some creaky dialogue...but the thing that holds it together is that Claire Foy surprisingly convincing.

That's it. That's all that has changed. Foy in the lead role. Otherwise everything else is the same, only worse.
