I'm reluctant to call it a triumph as it's way too precious to tap into the raw emotionality of the source material. This is Jenkins buying into his own hype.

Although the film is beautifully shot and filled with great performances, ultimately If Beale Street Could Talk lacks that deep gut punch that makes a movie stick.
September 10, 2018
The film turns into a picturesque experience more than any kind of involving, tension-filled, or even emotional one.

You can see the broad outline of what Jenkins wanted to accomplish with If Beale Street Could Talk, but the inside is hollow.

Despite a moving performance by Regina King, Jenkins' film has a sense of dramatic imposture and has a hard time shaking it. [Full Review in Spanish]

A failed allegory driven by TAXI DRIVER'S music and TD's evocative gritty cinematography. Bad acts are okay if you are poor.

It's not a sophisticated view but a reductionist one.

The experience of this film is beyond mixed, practically schizophrenic - long stretches of portentous, syrupy emptiness, followed by scenes that rank with Jenkins' best work in "Moonlight" and "Medicine for Melancholy."

Where Moonlight had a light, original touch, If Beale Street Could Talk is weighed down with a slow, prettified style and with music that's asked to do too much.

The planets of the plot, as it were, are more exciting than the sun around which they revolve.

Jenkins's Beale Street is not sensual or idealistic enough, and it feels thoroughly inauthentic.

For some reason, however, Jenkins freezes everything in amber, and the blind man never sings.

Barry Jenkins has created an affecting dreamscape; ephemeral yet all too real. If Beale Street Could Talk is surreal, so much so it throws you off balance while sucking you in.

The theme of living your best life despite the hand you're dealt, especially when the two young lovers represent the shattered hopes and dreams of us all, is one that's as hopeful as it is depressing.

If Beal Street Could Talk it would tell you that love lives in the Black community, hope survives in those relationships, justice evades righteousness and family still bonds a people. A Must See, 4 Reels

Though it has a touching love story we care about, If Beale Street Could Talk works better as a tribute to the strength of African-American mothers who are the backbones of their families. From that angle, I found it really moving.

...Jenkins orchestrates the score, the visuals, and a mix of his and Baldwin's words into an inclusive and stunning cinematic experience.

Like a soul song that moves through one's heart, the film evokes numerous emotions with each eloquent note it hits.

It's poetry in motion and works best as a visual experience on its own terms. Jenkins infuses his own luscious colors palettes, blending the voice of the source material that remembers the past with an omnipresent voice for an explosion of lyrical love.
