The Crimes of Grindelwald exists solely as a place setter for whatever the third FB movie ends up being (Pickett Goes Bananas?)

It's just terrible and I'm sad. The end.

An incoherent but not entirely unenjoyable mess of a prequel

Audiences will likely find themselves losing connection to everyone but Newt, who is the only character given a solid arc. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is a visually beautiful misstep. "Accio, better script!"

It is still a joy to look at, from design and action to overflowing content of the magical world.

An enchanting return visit to the Wizarding World with stunning set design, an engaging story, and masterful performances.

The Crimes of Grindelwald fails to reproduce the fun of the original-and fills Rowling's Potterverse with a slew of gaping holes.

Because of these problems-as well as a multitude of other, even more mundane scripting issues-Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald elicits the wrong type of wonder.

There is something quite charming about the construction of Rowling's jokes, her touch for relationships, that feels organic and unexpected.

A too long, too weak, too confusing jumble of characters and ideas that most outside of the hardcore Harry Potter fan base will struggle to find any enjoyment.

The film didn't work as well as I hoped it would going in ... While the film offers some intriguing scenarios ... there is a lot left lacking as a film to itself.

CRIMES is the kind of film where good performances end up getting swept up and away by the swirling maelstrom of the plot.
