Impeccably shot, well-written and boasting great performances, Beautiful Boy is a cautionary tale of privilege but one that never cuts as deep as it should.

It means well, and it does well by its cinematic means as a tearjerking melodrama through its style - even if the style overburdens the narrative flow at times.

The film is most definitely driven by the one-two punch that is Carell and Chalamet. The more roles of this calibre Carell takes on, the harder it is to remember he started out as a comedian.

I would be lying if I didn't say that I found it moving.

Questionable filmmaking undercuts powerful performances in Beautiful Boy, an at times heart wrenching and too often perplexing delve into the vicious cycle of drug addiction.

I didn't warm to the way Belgian director Felix van Groeningen jumps backwards and forwards in time, but there's no mistaking the grim overall direction of travel, and Carell and Chalamet...are both excellent.

Belgian director Felix Van Groeningen adeptly crafts this portrait of the pair from their dual memoirs, charting David's helpless, floundering spectatorship of Nic's battle with meth addiction with heart and ample artistic verve.

As a study in the heartbreaks of parenting, Beautiful Boy brings to mind the old saying that the best days you'll ever have are the ones when your children are playing at your feet.

Carell & Chalamet make a straightforward script and distractingly hamfisted soundtrack watchable.

Despite its slightly dreamy aesthetic, Felix Van Groeningen's film unstintingly explores the strange world of addiction therapy, which at one point boils down to a cold-blooded severing of ties.

If the film ultimately becomes a little enamoured with the relentless grind of this process, Carell and Chalamet are good enough to see it through.
